Research Group awards, prizes and grants

Each year, our Research Groups give out awards and prizes to celebrate outstanding work by students and colleagues across the discipline.

They also provide funding to support the community in undertaking research.

Annual dissertation prizes

Every year, Research Groups award dissertation prizes recognising outstanding work by undergraduate and postgraduate students across the discipline, welcoming submissions from universities across the UK. 

Dissertation prizes offered for postgraduates:

Animal Geography Working Group postgraduate dissertation prize

The AGWG Postgraduate Dissertation Prize recognises outstanding work by MA/MSc students.

Deadline: 30 November

This prize is awarded for the best research paper by current or former Master's and PhD students.

Deadline: 1 November

Geographical Information Science Research Group postgraduate dissertation award

The GIScRG Postgraduate Award recognises outstanding dissertations at Master's level.

Deadline: 31 December

This prize recognises outstanding dissertations submitted as part of a MA or MSc degree.

Deadline: 2 February

This prize is awarded for exceptional postgraduate student dissertations.

Deadline: 31 January

This prize is awarded for the best postgraduate taught research contributions to rural geography.

Deadline: 31 October

Prizes for other achievements

Our Research Groups award prizes celebrating presentations, papers, books and other achievements by researchers.

The BSG awards three prizes recognising papers and talks in the field of geomorphology.

The CMRG prize showcases excellent presentations by postgraduate students.

The IDPR Review Prize is given to the best paper presented at a DevGRG sponsored session at the Society's Annual International Conference.

The EGRG Prize Competition is awarded for the best PhD thesis.

The EnGRG Paper Prize recognises outstanding writing by postgraduate students.

Deadline: 1 May

The PolGRG Book Award recognises books published in the two years previous to the call.

Deadline: 19 December

The Robin Flowerdew award celebrates the best postgraduate paper presented in a QMRG sponsored session at the Annual Conference.

Transport Geography Research Group postgraduate presentation prize

The TGRG PGR Prize is open to postgraduate students who present at TGRG-sponsored sessions at the RGS-IBG Annual Conference.

Awards

With their awards, Research Groups recognise the leading and longstanding contributions of their colleagues to the sub-disciplines.

The BSG present multiple awards for contributions to geomorphology.

The Activism Award distinguishes those who actively contribute to energy justice.

Transport Geography Research Group Hay Award

The Hay Award recognises contributions to the advancement of transport geography.

Deadline: 23 February

Grants and funding

Groups provide funding opportunities to support the research community to attend conferences, undertake fieldwork and host events.

The BSG offers a number of grants for postgraduate and non-postgraduate BSG members to support scientific excellence in geomorphology.

The DevGRG Research and Travel Award is aimed at those preparing for PhD to support research and fieldwork.

Gender and Feminist Geographies Research Group Conference Attendance Award

Award offered to student/low income scholars for attendance to the Society's Annual International Conference.

Deadline: 26 May

The HGRG provides funding for small conferences and to support postgraduate students in conference attendance.

Deadline: 1 December

The HPGRG Award supports projects which seek to widen audience engagement within the history and philosophy of geography.
